Idaho fursuit builders?
[info]kitefeathers wrote in [info]fursuit
Hi there! I hope this is acceptable for this community, but I was wondering if there are any fursuit builders in Idaho state? Preferably in northern Idaho, or along the Washington/Idaho border. (I'm in Palouse County) I'd love to meet up with other fursuit builders and collaborate some, share ideas/techniques, etc if others are willing. ^__^

Fursuit Foam Question
[info]trolloc_wot wrote in [info]fursuit
Hey everyone, I have been reading up here and have gathered alot of useful information.  I have a few questions though and thought maybe someone might be able to help.

1) I am making a fursuit with foam to enhance the muscle form.  Most of the foam will be added in the shoulder, chest and back area.  I was wondering what would be a good foam firmness to use to simulate muscles.  In addition, on top of this suit I will be wearing armor that weighs quite a bit. (~30 lbs)  I have read up on ILD and would like some input from the community before purchasing some foam.  My line of thinking is to get the firmest I can get to minimize the deformation under the weigh of the armor, but I don't want it so firm I can't move.  Any suggestions?

2) I found some foam at JoAnn's Fabric, but it was $70 for a 5"x24"x36" piece.  Does anyone know any location or website that sells it cheaper than that?  Or is JoAnn's about the right price?  I need something pretty firm I think.

Thank you for you time!

A little help with hair...
[info]autumn_sunrise wrote in [info]fursuit
Hey all! ^^ I'm a total noob to fursuit making so I've been perusing this place and getting lots of tips and ideas for when I finally jump into making my first suit! However, I haven't been able to find much about one particular thing...so here I am asking it! What do you guys use for long hair on a fursuit, and where can you get it? The reason I ask is...this is the character I'm looking to make a suit of! Her bangs are the only thing I'm really unsure of how to do as far as what kind of materials to use. I've heard horsehair is sometimes used for longer manes/tails, or longer pile furs, but can you find fake hair in certain colors, or do you usually dye it yourself? Is it better to weft hair like this into the fur (a thing I have no idea how to do...) or what? Any info or help I can get is much appreciated. XD

Rukia Sode No Shirayuki tutorial/tips?

Does anyone here know where I can find a tutorial to make a Sode No Shirayuki model for Anime Boston? Also, any tips for a first time cosplayer attempting to cosplay the younger Kuchiki?

ETA-- If someone has any suggestions for kenseikan for my Byakuya cosplayer, that would be nice too :)

Installing Fans
[info]kawaiixteddy wrote in [info]fursuit

Hello againn :]

So I'm trying to figure out how to put fans in my suit heads.  Is it possible to put a fan in a balaclava/foam base head? If so, where would you put it? and how would you put it in there?  I'm aware of Matrices tutorial, but that only says how to put it in a mesh base head.

If anyone has ideas, or knows how to do this that's be great!

Help with a Duct tape Dummy
[info]cedar_musketeer wrote in [info]fursuit
While I know there are several tutorials out there on how to make a DTD, I have a special situation I don't think they have ever covered. I am planning on making a female suit similar to [info]roxikat but not in spandex and she will be an equine. I am wondering how I should make the Dummy, or should I make two different dummies, one with and one without the boobs. If you wish to leave a reply you can post itHere ) Thank you in advance for your assistance, also any advice on material for horse hide would be appreciated too.

Can this be saved?
[info]borderdog wrote in [info]fursuit
I have at least 3 yards of this fur, and every bit of it is so awful.
I guess from being rolled on the bolt the fibers are just a mess, going in every direction and flattened in weird patterns.
I've got a picture of it next to a piece of the same fur that is nice and smooth and pretty!
Is there anything I can do to save it? I certainly can't use it like this :[
I tried brushing but that doesn't help at all.

does anybody here have experience using temptu dura colours?

http://www.camerareadycosmetics.com/proddetail.php?prod=TemptuDuraSpecialtyColors

i'm curious to know if a 1 oz bottle will last a while, as i'm not really sure how much to buy. also, if you have any tips on applying/removing the paint, please share! i plan on painting it on with a paint brush. thank you!

for reference, this is the tattoo i'm trying to replicate )

edit: ALSO. if i dye a white cami, will the trim dye too? or will it stay white? i think it's a satin trim, but i'm not 100%.

YAY FOR ROBOTS!
[info]blackcat2086 wrote in [info]fursuit
So I just got my mom's 1987, Kenmore model# 385.1884180 sewing machine. I haven't touched this thing since 4-H in grade school, so it's pretty much new to me again. I just ordered the manual online because my mom couldn't find it, but so far my mom's been able to get me set up so I know how to get started doing a basic straight stitch. I've tested it out on some of Distinctive Fabric's notoriously-thick-and-difficult-to-work-with 2" pile fur and so far it's plowing through it like it's butter.

I was just curious if anyone has had any experience with this model (because I can't seem to find anything online so far), or has any newbie sewing machine advice to keep me in line while I wait for my manual to come in the mail.

Hips are always good ll

Okay so i thought i was done doing the foam work on Faye's body suit but it turns out that it needs hips and a bit of more booty lol. However, i have no idea how i should carve these pieces.....ugh. Does anyone have any examples of their foaming stage when adding hips or booty? This will really help me out a lot! Thank you ^_^

Beak sclupt.

Working on a project for FC. Redesinging Muddle for Muddle Designs.

Long poofy tail, no species, just a lot of colors and poof.
Main color is blue.
Hooves, digi-legs.
Normal paws.
Goat ears.
Beak.

He's... in pieces. I have the paws, but they have no fur. The tail needs to be combed out into fur, the hat that'll be his head needs the other ear and the fur. And then there's the pants... which are slowly getting yarned up to be combed out for fur.

But here's the beak!

Big image )

I just sculpted it out of clay. I am waiting until it's mostly dry so I can smooth out the cracks that formed as it dried. Then I'll cover it in latex according to this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=illlheX-uO4

Sorry for the poor-quality pictures, it's just a work in progress. Anyone know where to get liquid latex this time of year? Party City doesn't have it. I tried to get it from Ben Nye, but a $3.50 bottle would take two or more weeks to ship and would cost $20 to ship. I'm not paying almost seven times the price of the object to ship it. I didn't look any higher. Shipping shocked me out of the site.

Southern California, anyone have a bottle they are looking to sell/get rid of or know a place that sells it year around? Also, how's the beak look? It's on a Styrofoam head that has a natural tilt to it.

Cutting Sweater Sleeves Off
[info]jenthehen wrote in [info]cosplay
Ok ... I found the perfect color sweater at the thrift store for a dollar for a Kurumu cosplay ~ yay! Only *small* dilemma - it's actually a sweater and not a sweater vest ... so ... I thought, I'll just cut off the sleeves. NOW, before I start hacking away at this *perfect* sweater with scissors, does anyone have any advice about doing this? Like, something I should know in advance so I don't ruin the clothing.

Thanks for your advice!

GAH!
[info]rona_dolvi wrote in [info]fursuit
Gah! I've just about had it with this foam. I may as well roast marshmallows over the flames of defeat.

Does anyone do foam head commissions for fursuits? Just the foam, so I can fur it and add the eyes and teeth and tongue and all that myself. I'd really like a toony skunk female head with a possible moving jaw on a 'clava.

I can pay forty down in a few days as PayPal takes a long time to clear for me, then the rest by PayPal later.

Anyone that can do this? Please.

Can I fur now?

I think I'm done with the foam base... just wondering to get a few opinions-

They're not the most pleasing pictures, but it shows the head at a few decent angles.

The white fail paint (brought out by the flash) and any lines or whatsoever will be completely covered. The buckram is only pinned in for now.

I plan on using navy blue seal fur, fleece (either double layered or with a layer of muslin below it), with red and yellow sparkle fur for the flame top.

Eye Have a Question
[info]feralityillust wrote in [info]fursuit
Just a quick question about eye styles that use solid clear half-domes - what type of clear adhesive do you use to affix the flat eye backing to the back of the cabochon? Superglue? Hotglue? I want to make sure I don't use anything that will separate or yellow after time. Thanks!

Homemade paper clay
[info]louveg wrote in [info]fursuit
Don't you love rush orders? grmbl...

But grumbling aside, I need to build a jaw set from scraps because there's no time for me to order one over the Internet. It needs to be on the large side, like a large grizzly jaw or a lion jaw, something big with big long teeth. Therefore it needs to be light.

I wanted to get that paper clay people here have been mentioning with nothing but praise on it's weight and solidity, however around here the only one I found was 10$ for a teeny tiny bag. I can't help but feel bad that paper pulp would cost so much.

Is there a way to make that pulp at home in an efficient way? I'd rather avoid going the "regular" paper mache route because I was under the impression it would be so darn much longer to sculpt a jaw, cover it in paper strips, in many layers so it's solid enough but not so many that you lose all details, wait for it to dry between layers etc... I was under the impression working with the paper clay would be more like regular clay, as in you sculpt your shape than dry it. Once. (By all means correct me if my assumptions are wrong)

So, anyone know how to make paper clay with common household objects?

Or does anyone have another suggestion?

I am not equipped for casting, and I do not mean only in material but in terms of working space. Therefore anything regarding casting is sadly out of the question.
This costume is being built on a budget for a LARP. I'm tying my best to keep the best look with the lowest budget possible.

The regular air dry clay was much cheaper, 5$ for approximately the same quantity, but it appeared heavy as heck. I know it'll become lighter once dried, but I wasn't sure it'd be light enough...

I considered Crayola Model Magic but voted against it since I know it's not long lasting enough. Since this costume is going to cost the LARP a heck of a huge part of their budget, we want it to be built to last, at least, so that it's an investment more than one time thing.

*** EDITED TO ADD ***

Do not worry, I have almost 10 years of LARP experience under my belt and know the risks involved with fursuit-type costumes and LARPS. This is an indoor LARP, with no weapons other than Nerf guns (it's a steampunk LARP) so I'm not worried. :) No roots or branches to trip on, no stupid idiot to hit you with their huge ass swords while you cannot see them, etc. ;) Our main concern is whether the Nerf projectiles will be noticeable under a layer of fur so that the beast knows it's been hit. LOL
